Reverse Engineering

Have you ever used a device; it could have been anything around your home or school, and wondered how it works? We rarely stop to think about how the things around us work and take them for granted, and now is your opportunity to find out what is inside these things and see for yourself how they work together to produce the outcome you desire.

The Task:

Your challenge is to learn as much as you can about machines by taking one completely apart, examining it, and learning how it works.

( this process is called reverse engineering )

The Criteria:

1) You may not smash anything! Smashed parts will earn you no credit on this project!

2) You must take apart everything! No part may remain attached to any other part. The only exception is circuit boards- they may remain intact due to their complexity. (even if you know how to solder, it is more time than you want to spend on this project!)

3) You must label each part with it's name as best you are able- You may use masking tape, self-stick labels, marking pen, etc.

4) Parts must be attached to a piece of cardboard so that you can carry it easily. (Do not go and buy a folding report poster- use the inside of an old cardboard box you would normally throw away!)

5) You may use white glue, wire, or hot glue to attach your parts to the board; the twisty ties from the market for tying vegetable baggies are useful too! Be as creative as you like, and avoid expensive adhesives like super glue.

6) You must give a one minute presentation to the class on what you have learned about your project .

Grading:

There are two parts to this project:

The dismantle part

The show and tell part

Those who do this assignment will obtain credit for one project and it will be included as credit for the semester. Avoiding this assignment will probably mean you will not achieve an "A" for the semester.

Due Date: ____________________________

Notes:

--This is your project and not your parent's project

-- Please do not bring it late; you may bring it to class anytime before the due date for safekeeping.

-- As with everything in educaiton, it is your choice to do this project. The consequence of not completing it is that you will probably be unable to achieve an "A" for the semester.
